Helen Henderson discovered the AbilityOne program through a Goodwill associate, and her journey to employment with a greater purpose began.
After years of working seven days a week, she needed to find a better working schedule to give her more time for her family. She soon built a family through her work at Fort Gordon.
Helen is a leader among her peers. She leads by example. She leads by doing.
She started as a custodian at Fort Gordon but her willingness to take on more responsibilities while showing professionalism earned her a promotion to Quality Assurance. Helen uses her vast on-the-job knowledge to inspect the completed jobs of the crews who clean the base’s facilities including day cares and commissaries.
Good Vocations Project Manager Eric Lane describes Helen as honest, positive and dependable. But it’s her ability to see the potential in each crew member that makes her stand above.
“Helen has learned to work with associates and their limitations to get the best
quality from their work,” said Eric. “She helps them deal with different situations
and find their fullest potential.”
Helen applies the same diligence and patience she shows others to better herself by learning new things. She now also serves as a part-time forklift driver at the commissary. Helen aspires to be in a management role one day. We have no doubt she’ll achieve anything she sets her mind to.
