Lizzie was shopping at a Goodwill store in Macon and noticed a Good Vocations van dropping off workers after their shift. She asked the employee at the register where those workers came from and what had they been doing. The cashier explained they were working through Good Vocations at Robins Air Force Base. Lizzie wanted more information about applying and was directed to her local Job Connection Career Center.
She began as a custodian, a work environment that was completely new to her. She credits her supervisor for the training she received to accomplish her tasks successfully. She also learned how to work alongside and supervise other employees who have mental or physical barriers and now serves as a project manager.
Lizzie’s dedication to quality work and her dependability quickly made her a standout
employee.
Her drive and determination have served her well. When she began working with Good Vocations, transportation was a big issue, as she lived an hour away from the base and didn’t have a car. She struggled with transportation issues for several months until she was able to buy a dependable vehicle. Then she bought a home closer to her worksite.
“Working for this program and Good Vocations, I have learned to become more outgoing and assertive,” she said. “I have learned to be more open and accepting of others and the barriers they face in their own lives.”
